Len LaCara Joins The Marshall Project as Strategic Analytics Manager

The veteran journalist and analytics manager will expand and deepen analytics for the criminal justice news organization.

Veteran journalist and analytics expert Len LaCara joins The Marshall Project as its first-ever Strategic Analytics Manager, a role designed to deepen the organization’s understanding of audiences and strengthen how data informs both its journalism and business strategies. LaCara joins us as a seasoned newsroom leader with extensive experience in analytics, audience development, and digital transformation.

LaCara distinguished himself during the hiring process through his exceptional analytical depth and creativity. His presentation stood out for its clarity and rigor, offering balanced insights into both challenges and opportunities for The Marshall Project. Len has previously worked as a senior strategist, audience analyst, business editor, enterprise editor, online and audience editor at local and national organizations, including USA Today/Gannett and Lee Enterprises.

In this new role, LaCara will lead the creation of a cohesive analytics framework to measure engagement, growth, and impact across The Marshall Project’s platforms. He will partner with teams across editorial, technology, and business to make analytics accessible and actionable for all. LaCara’s thoughtful, mission-driven approach — grounded in transparency and education — will help shift our culture toward a stronger, data-informed organization that uses insights to drive both editorial excellence and strategic sustainability. He will also partner with Chief Strategy Officer Ebony Reed on projects as The Marshall Project continues to serve various audiences, ranging from the general public to those who work in the justice system and those who are justice-impacted.

LaCara joins Reed’s team. He is based in Rochester, New York.
