Drawing on journalist Maurice Chammah’s series on the epic story of music in American prisons, this one-night event combines a live rendition of Musicambia’s songbook, along with storytelling, photography and film, to explore how genres from blues to soul to rap have offered paths to rehabilitation, resistance and hope for people behind bars, from the Jim Crow South to ICE detention centers today.
Chammah will be joined by Lawrence Bartley, the publisher of The Marshall Project Inside, and the Cambia Collective, an ensemble of teachers and alumni of Musicambia, which offers lessons in instruments and composition across genres to people at Sing Sing Correctional Facility and other prisons across the country.
