Jonah Newman

Senior Editor for Local Investigations and Engagement

I edit investigative stories and projects from our local investigative reporters in Cleveland, St. Louis and Jackson.

My Background

My journalism career has primarily focused on the courts and criminal justice system. Before joining The Marshall Project in 2026, I was the managing editor of Injustice Watch, a nonprofit news organization in Chicago focused on the court system, where I edited investigative stories about judges, policing, prison conditions, juvenile justice, immigration and wrongful convictions. Under my leadership, we were recognized with awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Online News Association and the Institute for Nonprofit News. I also oversaw our judicial election guides, which were used by hundreds of thousands of voters and won recognition for community engagement and public service journalism. Previously, I was an editor at Pacific Standard and a reporter at Invisible Institute, the Chicago Reporter and the Chronicle of Higher Education. I live in Chicago with my family.
