Data Reporting Fellow
I dig through records to see how immigration enforcement really works: who gets swept up, what happens once they're locked up and who pays for it. I write code to turn data into stories about people in the system.
I've spent years reporting on immigrant communities and the systems that detain them. As a border reporter for The Arizona Republic, I covered overcrowding at the Eloy Detention Center, ICE arrests outside courthouses and the deadly desert routes that enforcement pushes people into. I've used data to break stories on Arizona's surge in ICE arrests and Maryland's 287(g) agreements.
I got my start with the Cronkite Borderlands Initiative at Arizona State University, then went back to school to learn the data skills to hold the Department of Homeland Security accountable. I'm now earning a master's at the University of Maryland, where I'm a fellow at the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism.
I'm from the Rose neighborhood on Tucson's south side, the son of Mexican immigrants, and I report in English and Spanish.
