Tammy Galarza is a Marshall Project Inside Associate. They are a BOLD Fellow recipient and recent graduate from Rutgers University-Newark with a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and a concentration in Social Justice. While at Rutgers, Tammy was the assistant facilitator for the honors-level “Intergroup Dialogue” course, where they provided academic guidance to over 20 students and cultivated dialogue-driven lesson plans aimed at sustaining marginalized identities through a lens of transformative justice. For their unyielding leadership efforts, Tammy was chosen as the honors recipient to represent Rutgers’ School of Criminal Justice during their 2020 Commencement Ceremony. Before joining The Marshall Project, Tammy was a site leader at the Sadie Nash Summer Institute — an intensive six-week program for young women and gender-expansive youth to redefine traditional notions of leadership by engaging in courses about society, identity, social justice, and other topics designed to foster critical thinking and a sense of community.
