Tammy Galarza

Associate, The Marshall Project Inside

they/them

I support The Marshall Project Inside’s publisher and assist in reviewing more than 3,000 letters a year from incarcerated individuals, families and support groups. I help expand our reach to facilities nationwide and collaborate on producing News Inside.

My Background

I graduated from Rutgers University-Newark with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a concentration in social justice. In 2022, I was selected as The Marshall Project’s BOLD Women's Leadership Network Fellow, a program that develops emerging women leaders across various industries. In 2023, I became a fellow in the Freedom Forum’s Chips Quinn Scholars Program for Diversity in Journalism, which supports journalists from underrepresented backgrounds in advancing their careers.

Recently, I obtained a certification in hands-on mapmaking for journalism, offered by the University of Texas at Austin, and am in the process of obtaining a social media marketing certification through New York University.

My educational background and growing professional expertise amplify my connection to my role, giving me a deeper understanding of the systems and issues we help cover at The Marshall Project.
