The Marshall Project seeks an accomplished and versatile audience development editor to help us better understand our readership and build loyal audience. Our audience development editor should be a strong writer with a nuanced grasp of social media and the ability to draw actionable insights from data analytics. They must be able to meet deadlines and juggle competing demands on their time. They will report to the Director of Communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Use analytics and surveys to tell us more about who our audience is, and how and why they use our content. Mine this data to help us understand and expand our readership and help our journalism have greater impact.

  • Manage The Marshall Project’s social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This involves working with our editorial team on producing all the copy for each account, and ensuring that we have a lively and engaging daily feed of content.

  • Work with the newsroom to maximize search engine optimization; help to workshop SEO-optimized headlines; work with our editorial team to optimize our search terms.

  • Work with our membership manager to grow our base of small donors.

  • Work with the newsroom on audience engagement strategies pegged to specific stories.

  • Attract and acquire new audiences and deepen engagement with them—including social, search, email and third-party. Establish best practices in the newsroom for audience cultivation and engagement.

  • Work with TMP staffers to grow their presence on social media, and strategize on how best to tell stories via social.

  • In close partnership with the newsroom and our developers, work on new products such as weekly newsletters to build new audiences and subscribers.

  • Strategize about how to distribute our work on off-site platforms like Apple News and Flipboard.

  • Cultivate a loyal community of criminal justice experts and ambassadors for The Marshall Project, with an eye to expanding our audience beyond the professionally engaged audience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum 3-5 year proven track record in managing and supporting social accounts.

  • Expert knowledge of social media trends and best practices for organic and paid posts.

  • Familiarity with user experience and SEO content strategies

  • Ability to analyze key performance metrics; experience with native social analytics. Experience with Chartbeat and Google Analytics is a plus.

  • Strong writing and editing skills with keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to set and abide by project deadlines; ability to prioritize projects; experience managing both urgent, short-term projects and complex, longer-term projects.

  • Deep interest in keeping up with digital trends and forecasting.

  • This position is full-time and will be based in our New York City newsroom. However, due to COVID-19, our office is currently closed and we are all working from home until September, or possibly longer.
