Job Description
The Marshall Project seeks an experienced, dynamic, forward-thinking executive and ambassador who will help to shape and guide the organization’s strategic vision and long-term sustainability.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will oversee the following non-editorial areas of responsibility: communications, fundraising, finance/budget management, operations and legal.
The Executive Director will be responsible for:
• Refining and implementing the strategic plan
• Setting and directing organizational priorities
• Defining systems for evaluating effectiveness and program impact; instituting benchmarks
• Soliciting individual and major gifts and grants; developing institutional partnerships to advance the mission.
Success in the job will require:
• Management and team-building skills, including the ability to solve problems as they arise, motivate change, align efforts, and set goals in an effort to create a strong sense of common purpose
• Entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to find innovative ways to grow an organization
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred or equivalent experience
• 8-10 years senior management experience
• Nonprofit organization experience preferred
• Experience working collaboratively with and reporting to Board of Directors
• Strong writing and interpersonal skills
• Strong organizational skills with proven ability to focus, prioritize and implement
• Understanding of current trends in journalism
• Digital/technological competency
• Experience in journalism a plus
• Passion for social justice issues
Salary commensurate with experience.
