Marlon A. Walker

Managing editor, local

I build and oversee news teams across the U.S. that make up The Marshall Project - Local, where reporters focus on the justice systems in local communities.

My Background

I have built a two-decade career primarily in local newsrooms around the country, reporting and editing on criminal justice, municipal governments and education, among other things. Before becoming an editor, I was a reporter for newspapers including the News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Macon (Georgia) Telegraph, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Detroit Free Press and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Before coming to The Marshall Project, I was executive and state editor for several Gannett publications in Mississippi, including the Clarion Ledger in Jackson and the Hattiesburg American.

In addition to my daily work, I mentor and serve on advisory boards advocating for better diversity in newsrooms and helping to train future journalists.
