Geoff Hing

Data Reporter

he/him/his

I file public records requests and talk to government workers and researchers to find data and documents about criminal justice systems. I write code to extract and analyze data reflecting experiences in those systems, particularly those of unhoused people.

My Background

At The Marshall Project, I have covered measures aimed at increasing enforcement of laws targeting homelessness, and the nexus of climate and the policing of unhoused people, and contributed reporting about the safety of people in prison amidst climate risks.

I have worked as part of investigative, data and news applications teams in a number of newsrooms. At The Arizona Republic, I covered demographic change in the state and contributed data reporting to enterprise projects on water use and prison labor. At APM Reports, I covered voting rights and analyzed police use-of-force data and records as part of a team investigating the efficacy of Tasers. As a City Bureau fellow, I covered interactions between law enforcement and immigration enforcement. And while at The Chicago Tribune, I helped analyze and visualize police accountability and shooting data.

Contact Me About...

I want to hear about experiences with police while you or a loved one has been unhoused or facing housing insecurity. I’m also interested in the experiences of police, or others working with the police, when encountering unhoused community members.
